Virgin Mobile welcomes the launch of Tesco Mobile
04/06/2003
Virgin Mobile’s Chief Executive, Tom Alexander, said: “Virgin Mobile, with its strong consumer brand, has taken the UK mobile marketplace by storm, and provides an irresistible proposition for millions of consumers. Other, less sizeable, virtual networks have launched in the UK following our lead, but the launch of a venture such as this will undoubtedly increase competition and provide more consumer choice. “Ironically, the launch of Tesco Mobile will increase awareness of our own brand, as consumers become better-educated about alternatives to the old ‘traditional’ four networks. And besides, we like the challenge of healthy competition!” Virgin Mobile launched in November 1999 as the UK’s first MVNO. Since then its simple, good-value proposition has attracted more than 2.7 million customers. In the first three months of 2003, Virgin Mobile, with its youthful focus, confirmed its position as the UK’s fastest-growing mobile business by attracting 253,200 customers; more customers than any other operator in the UK telecoms market. Recording its most successful first quarter yet, the virtual network has sustained its impressive record of significant ongoing growth, at a time when the other mobile companies experienced a dramatic decline. Virgin Mobile forecasts that its revenues in 2003 will exceed £450 million.
