In 1940, the FMC Corporation helped to design a light amphibious tracked vehicle for the agricultural market.
The design soon caught the attention of military planners and a military version was soon being developed. It was known as the Landing Vehicle, Tracked (LVT). By the end of the Second World War FMC had built 11,251 LVT vehicles for the Armed Services. In January 1994, FMC Corporation and the Harsco Corporation agreed to combine their defence businesses, and formed United Defence Limited Partnership.
