Industry Award for Storm Shadow
The Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile has won the Missiles and Military Aircraft category of the Aerospace Industry 2004 Awards, organised by Flight International magazine to recognise excellence in the aerospace industry.
Storm Shadow won the award for its technological achievement in revolutionising air forces’ airborne precision strike capability.
Laser Centre of Excellenc
On 22 March 2004, the Rt Hon Jim Wallace QC MSP, the Scottish Executive's Deputy First Minister and Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, visited Crewe Toll to formally open the new Laser Centre of Excellence, which is a £4m investment in the Edinburgh site.
MAJOR PROGRAMMES UPDATE
ITT delivered to Singapore Government
BAE Systems, MBDA and Eurojet jointly submitted its Invitation To Tender (ITT) response for the Singaporean Next Fighter Replacement Programme on 2 March 2004.
The Singaporean Government will now review the bids from the three competitors.
UK production of JSF gets underway
Production of the first UK components for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), the world’s next generation stealth fighter, has started at Samlesbury, where the aft fuselage and tails for the JSF will be manufactured.
India Hawk contract signed
Following on from the Memorandum of Understanding signed mid March 2004, the Government of India signed a contract with BAE Systems on 26 March to utilise Hawk aircraft as the new Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) for the Indian Air Force.
The contract comprises the purchase of 66 Hawk aircraft; ground based training systems, associated support and interim pilot training.
Brunei
The first ship, OPV01 is complete and berthed at the Scotstoun dockside on a care and maintenance basis.
OPV02 commenced SAT(5) sea trials on 22 March and will proceed to final SAT (Gunnery) trials on the South coast during the last two weeks of April. Final acceptance is anticipated towards the end of May.
The last ship, OPV03, remains in the covered dry dock where the exterior of the ship will be completed. Progress is continuing to plan.
Submarine milestones achieved
The Submarines business has already achieved two of nine anchor milestones set for the business in 2004. The milestones demonstrate to the Ministry of Defence that the Astute submarine and other programmes are on track.
Early LPD Milestone
Bulwark, the second Landing Platform Dock assault ship, has achieved a key milestone towards the accelerated programme to deliver the ship early.
BAE SYSTEMS CONTRACT AWARDS THIS MONTH
MSI Poland
BAE Systems Avionics has been selected by the Polish Government as Avionics Mission Systems Integrator (MSI) for the Mi-24 helicopter upgrade programme.
This marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time that a Russian platform has been fully upgraded to be NATO interoperable, and cements Avionics' position as Mission Systems Integrator to the Mi-24 and Mi-17 platforms.
Australian Defence Force extends deployment of DFMS
BAE Systems Australia has recently received Australian Defence Force (ADF) tasking to upgrade the Defence Formal Messaging System (DFMS).
Extension received for F/A-18 software support
BAE Systems Australia’s IASSF manpower services contract has received a 4 year extension with immediate effect. The extension will allow integrated avionics software support during the Hornet Upgrade program.
$13m Army order for Portable Refueling System
Platform Solutions received a US$13 million contract from the U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive and Armament Command to deliver 54 additional units of its second-generation Advanced Aviation Forward Area Refueling System (AAFARS).
This fifth production order is part of an eight-year contract that is expected to exceed $100 million.
AAFARS is a modular, lightweight, portable combat refueling system designed for rapid refueling of forward-area military helicopters in support of deep strikes.
Platform Solutions wins EA-6B Digital Flight Control contract
The U.S. Navy has selected Platform Solutions to develop a new digital flight control system for EA-6B Prowler aircraft.
Avionic Systems will develop the digital flight control computer and control panel based on existing product the unit provides to the Navy for the F-14 Tomcat.
The US$15 million contract is expected to lead to a production order for up to 134 systems.
Naval Undersea Warfare Center services contract
Team Keyport Services, a joint venture between BAE Systems and Raytheon Systems Company, has been awarded a US$54 million contract for professional, engineering, and business management services in support of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport, Wash., USA.
The total cumulative value of the contract could reach US$301 Million if all four one-year options are exercised.
$14m contract mod for Engineering Services
BAE Systems Technology Solutions Sector has been awarded a US$14 Million modification to a previously awarded contract for engineering and technical services for life cycle support of communication-electronic (C-E) equipment supporting the Special Communications Requirements Division at the Naval Air Systems Command, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, St. Inigoes, Md., USA.
$85m Navy contract for Above Water Sensors Support
BAE Systems has been awarded a US $85 million contract from the U.S. Navy’s Sea Systems Command.
The company will provide technical, program management, financial management, and administrative support to the Program Executive Office (PEO), Integrated Warfare Systems (IWS) Above Water Sensors Program Office for the Navy’s in-service radars and next generation surface ship radar systems.
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
AMS makes first successful SAMPSON transmission
SAMPSON, the state-of-the-art multi-function radar destined for the Type 45 destroyer, made its first transmission on Tuesday, 9 March. These first test transmissions mark a significant step in the development programme.
Coastal Surveillance System for Polish Border Guard
ATLAS ELEKTRONIK has received an order for a coastal surveillance system from the Polish Border Guard. The pilot scheme will provide surveillance of the Polish coastline from the Russian border to the Hel peninsula, north of the Gdansk Bight.
Upgrade to Bremen VTS
ATLAS ELEKTRONIK has been awarded a contract by the Bremen branch of the Federal German Water & Shipping Administration for upgrading of its present Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) network controlling seagoing traffic along 37km of the River Weser between Bremen and Harriersand, an island in its estuary.
