MBDA wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2004
An award, in the Innovation category, has been conferred on MBDA, for its development and industrial application of the Butler Chip, which provides hardware support to replace a conventional computer software operating system.
The Butler Chip has been developed for integration on MBDA’s ASRAAM and Seawolf missiles and there is a wide range of potential applications for this kind of technology outside the defence industry.
NITEworks - MoD Smart Acquisition Award 2004
The Minister, Defence Procurement, Awards Scheme was created to acknowledge and commend the achievements of those teams who produced outstanding contributions in the field of Smart Acquisition.
NITEworks received this award in recognition of the team’s partnership with the MoD and industry, in particular the success of breaking down IPR barriers and its exploitation of NEC (Network Enabled Capability) through innovation with high tempo and excellent stakeholder engagement.
The award ceremony and official reception was held on 24 May in the House of Lords where Lord Bach, the Minister for Defence Procurement, presented a certificate of achievement to representatives of NITEworks from across MoD and industry.
JAVELIN - Defence Procurement award
The Joint Approach to VC10 Engineering and Logistics Integration (JAVELIN) team has been awarded a Smart Procurement Award by the Minister, Defence Procurement for their work on the contract.
The award was presented to a joint team from the Defence Logistics Organisation, CS&S MASS' Tanking Transport and Reconnaisance Operations and the Defence Aviation Repairs Agency at the House of Lords in May.
Prince Charles opens RN submarine command team trainer
The Royal Navy’s Plymouth-based Talisman trainer has been officially opened by HRH Prince Charles. Developed by AMS, Talisman provides training for the full command teams of the RN’s Swiftsure and Trafalgar Class submarines, to instruct and practice every aspect of submarine operations.
MAJOR PROGRAMMES UPDATE
CS&S withdraws from UK MFTS bid to focus on AJT
CS&S MASS has announced the decision to withdraw from the UK Military Flying Training System (MFTS) programme. CS&S MASS had been bidding for this Public/Private Partnership with Serco and Bombardier.
The MFTS team will now focus on meeting customer needs by producing a competitive proposal for the related Advanced Jet Trainer programme and associated training.
Nimrod Partnering Code
Following the Defence Procurement Agency/Air Systems MRA4 Joint Management Board meeting at Abbey Wood on 13 May, Integrated Project Team Leader David King and Nimrod Managing Director Joe Harland formally signed the new MRA4 Partnering Code.
This provides a set of principles for the future management of the programme and the behaviours required to achieve success.
Typhoon Update
Since formally entering service back in 2003, Typhoon has performed well, as the RAF pilots work under the ‘Case White’ programme of operational training, test and evaluation. To date, more than 170 sorties have been flown, exceeding the contracted schedule by about 15%.
On 26 April 2004, Eurofighter GmbH signed the PC8 Supplement 1 contract with NETMA – one of 11 Procurement Contracts being issued to Eurofighter GmbH by NETMA.
These contracts provide various capabilities required by the four Eurofighter partner nation air forces in support of the Typhoon weapon system in-service. PC8 provides some of that capability, and resulted in a BAE Systems order intake of £53 million.
Type 45 Destroyer
Progress on shipbuild continues with 31 units currently in production at both facilities on the Clyde and at VT Group in Portsmouth.
PAAMS DD1 design dossier completed
A key achievement on PAAMS (Principal Anti-Air Missile System) occurred at the end of April with the completion of the system level design dossier, DD1. DD1 marks a major step forwards with the maturity of the system design, bringing to a close a significant number of changes to the baseline definition.
BAE SYSTEMS CONTRACT AWARDS THIS MONTH
Contract for Helicopter Protection Systems
Information & Electronic Warfare Systems (IEWS) was awarded a $25 million contract modification for 13 Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) systems with Common Missile Warning Systems (CMWS) and 40 separate CMWS systems.
ATIRCM provides next-generation directable, laser and lamp-based countermeasures to protect aircraft against heat-seeking missiles.
IEWS, the lead systems integrator for the U.S. Army’s ATIRCM program, received U.S. Army authorization in November 2003 to enter low-rate initial production for this system and is moving ahead now with aircraft integration.
U.S. Army Contract for Helicopter Fuel Systems
BAE Systems Platform Solutions has been awarded a U.S. Army contract for delivery of 160 Auxiliary Fuel Management Systems (AFMS) to be installed in UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
The $3.7 million contract also calls for the delivery of 60 auxiliary fuel management panels that will also be installed on Black Hawks.
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
AMS signs Polish CLS contract
AMS has signed a €1.5m contractor logistics support contract with NAMSA, the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency. The contract was drawn up to support the supply of three RAT 31 DL Fixed Air Defence Radar (FADR) systems to Poland.
Coastal Surveillance System for Polish Border Guard
ATLAS ELEKTRONIK has received an order worth €5m for a coastal surveillance system from the Polish Border Guard. The pilot scheme will provide surveillance of the Polish coastline from the Russian border to the Hel peninsula, north of the Gdansk Bight.
Further extensions to the scheme are planned in two phases with procurement decisions expected by the end of 2004 and in 2005.
Meteor trial fit on Gripen
A significant milestone for the Meteor Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) was successfully achieved on 21 April in Linköping, Sweden.
MBDA and its Meteor partner, SAAB, undertook the first trial fit of a geometrically representative Meteor missile with the JAS 39 Gripen combat aircraft.
The trial, which proved the compatibility of the mechanical interfaces between the Meteor missile, the Gripen’s Multi Missile Launcher (MML) and the aircraft, is highly significant as the Gripen will be the launch platform for the first air-launched live missile firing scheduled to take place at the Vidsel range in Sweden in the autumn of 2005.
