GENERAL NEWS
AEW&C world teaming agreement
BAE Systems Australia and the Boeing Company have signed a world teaming agreement to work closely together to capture future airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) business. Under the world teaming agreement BAE Systems and Boeing will use their complementary capabilities to respond to requests for proposals from potential customers around the world.
Southwick Park facilities
Flagship, one of CS&S Naval's joint venture companies has been awarded a contract to manage the historic 300 acre Southwick Park Estate. Southwick House was the Supreme Allied Headquarters during the 2nd World War, and is home to the famous ‘Map Room’ which still displays the original plans for the D-day landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
UK Secretary of State for Defence officially opens Stevenage Site
The UK Secretary of State for Defence, Geoff Hoon, declared the redeveloped MBDA UK Stevenage site officially open on 6 April. Mr Hoon was received by Marwan Lahoud (MBDA’s CEO) and Guy Griffiths (COO) and was accompanied by Barbara Follett, the MP for Stevenage.
MAJOR PROGRAMME UPDATE
Typhoon
The first Royal Air Force Typhoon squadron left Warton on Friday 1 April, bound for RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, their first RAF base in the UK.
The squadron, which has been based at Warton for the past fifteen months under the ‘Case White’ Entry Into Service programme, is responsible for the Operational Test and Evaluation of the RAF’s newest combat aircraft.
Nimrod MRA4
A proposal for the Assessment Phase of Partnered Support for the Nimrod MRA4 was submitted to the MoD on 31 March, a month ahead of plan. It is anticipated that MRA4 production contract will be awarded by end of 2005.
Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) platform support for Australia
The Australian Government, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems Australia have signed a partnering charter to enable the sustainment of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft in Australia.
BAE Systems Australia has been asked to lead Australian Industry, creating an environment for collaboration and long-term relationships between Australian Industry and Lockheed Martin for total JSF sustainment and follow-on development. The company will form and lead an Industry Coalition, which will build on the work of the Industry element of the JSF Regional Support Capability Task Force, established in August 2003 to undertake preliminary analysis of Australia’s JSF support requirements.
Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary)
RFA Cardigan Bay was successfully launched one day later than originally scheduled and a year to the day since the launch of her sister ship RFA Mounts Bay. The launch, originally scheduled for Friday 8 April, was postponed because of adverse tidal conditions caused by strong northerly winds.
The ship, the 751st to be launched from the Glasgow yard, was officially named and launched by Lady Jan Stanhope, wife of Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope KCB OBE, NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation.
Astute shaping up
First of class Astute has taken a recognisably submarine shape in Barrow’s Devonshire Dock Hall, with the five units forming the main submarine hull now combined.
