QIT Madagascar Minerals' (QMM) mineral sands mining project, in the Fort-Dauphin region, is the largest investment in the island's history. Rio Tinto owns 80 per cent of QMM through it's subsidiary QIT and the Madagascar Government owns the other 20 per cent.
Production of ilmenite (titanium dioxide) from the mine is expected in late 2008.
This project will be the catalyst for broader economic development of the country while providing conservation opportunities.
