To conserve biodiversity we will forgo mining of about 12 per cent of the minerals. The conservation zones established on the mining sites in Mandena and Ste Luce (and soon Petriky) will protect several dozen plant species endemic to the concession region. They will help to ensure the plants are saved from extinction. The zones are now part of Madagascar's national network of protected areas (SAPM).
Forest restoration work will follow mining and create buffer zones around the conservation zones.
The team
The conservation zones are a direct result of years of work by a dedicated group of botanists, fauna experts, and forest engineers and technicians – the QMM/Rio Tinto environmental team – working with partner organisations.
