Social-economic programme

Good management of community relationships is as necessary to our business success as the management of our operations.

We established a local full time social and environmental programme in 1996 staffed principally by Malagasy experts. National and international experts also work on the programme, including those from NGOs, and consultants. The result is an extremely successful partnership between private enterprise and international agencies.

Key achievements to date include:

  • Extensive consultation with villagers to determine their concerns and how to address them
  • HIV/AIDS programme
  • Micro finance initiatives
  • Building schools, clinics and wells in the rural area around the mining site
  • Local recruitment and skills transfer during the construction phase
  • Management of natural resources, which will lead to the eventual individual compensation programme
  • Education, from public to informal education. These include literacy programmes. Literacy is one obstacle that local people may face, in participating in the project. It is QMM’s aim to build local people's capacity so that everyone has the same opportunity to be involved.
